Art Workshops for Priority Youth in Toronto
David Kibuuka's Modern Batik Art Workshop Outreach Programs are committed to promoting and teaching Modern Batik Art. In partnership with Community MicroSkills Development Center, funding assistance of the Youth Challenge Fund, and with co-sponsorship by the Toronto Public Library, the Modern Batik Workshops work to assist youth in artistic self-expression.
Community MicroSkills Development Centre is a multi-cultural, non-profit, community-based organization that is committed to assisting the unemployed, with priority to women, youth, racial minorities and immigrants. Recognizing the barriers that women, immigrants, racial minorities, and youth face in their efforts towards self-sufficiency, MicroSkills strives to enable these individuals to participate to their full potential in Canadian society and assist them in acquiring the skills needed to achieve self-determination and economic, social and political equality.
Youth Challenge Fund aims to improve the opportunities for Toronto's young people, particularly in poorly served neighbourhoods in the city's suburban areas. By bringing together government and privately-matched funds, the Province of Ontario has invested $15 million and provided another $15 million in matching funds. The matching funds have been set up to encourage donations from the private sector and individuals, bringing the total potential investment to $45 million over the course of three years for 13 Priority Neighbourhoods in the Greater Toronto Area:
• Jamestown
• Jane-Finch
• Weston-Mount Dennis
• Lawrence Heights
• Westminster-Branson
• Crescent Town
• Flemingdon Park- Victoria Village
• Steeles-l'Amoreaux
• Dorset Park
• Eglinton East-Kennedy Park
• Scarborough Village
• Kingston-Galloway
• Malvern
These workshops provide students with the opportunity to appreciate and develop their latent artistic talent to enhance their idea of "self" - fostering confidence, esteem and discipline. The ultimate goal is to enhance their life skills through establishing a foundation and intersest for more knowledge and creativity. Together Microskills, Youth Challenge Fun and Modern Batik Workshops hope to inspire and support the Youth of Toronto to succeed, feel respected, valued and supported in working towards a positive future free of violence and discrimination.

GlobaMedic
On the evening of May 2, 2008, the Auction Committee of GlobalMedic will hold its fundraising auction event to provide funds for future deployments. As GlobalMedic has no overhead, all funds raised will go straight to emergency programs. This is a call to all artists who are willing and able to donate their artwork to help make our banquet a success.
