What Sketch does:
Art making is a curious way to address homelessness or poverty - growing issues in Canada, one of the wealthiest nations in the world.
Art making offers expression, self discovery and skill building. It facilitates participation in community life and in the making of culture.
Sketch creates art making opportunities for young people who live street-involved and homeless or who are considered to be at risk.
Why Sketch does it:
Homelessness and Poverty require innovative response.
Every person carries stories, perspectives and abilities that can effect personal and social change.
All people are creative and need the chance to tell or retell stories in whatever way we want to tell or retell them. We are all a part of making history regardless of what our life situations indicate.
Street involved and homeless youth seek alternatives to traditional forms of education, therapy and skill building. The arts allow youth to determine their own individual pace of change.
It's easier to make decisions when your imagination is awake. Working in the arts increases self-esteem, strengthens resilience and invigorates a desire to learn more.
The arts offer neutral and accessible territory that breaks down barriers and gets us to work together. A sense of voice in community elicits civic participation and reduces isolation.
We celebrate the creativity, resilience and diversity of youth who live homeless and see them as key contributors to culture and society.
How is Involved:
Sketch is the collaborative effort of so many people. The youth participating are key to the development of all of the programs offered. They are a part of the program delivery team. The leadership team of program coordinators and administrators work with youth to ensure the integrity of the vision of Sketch. A strong volunteer Board of Directors offers sound governing structure. Volunteers and placements offer invaluable assistance and resources for day-to-day programming and administration. Countless Donors and Funders offer generous support that propels a sense of gratitude and accountability in all our work. We are building this work-in-progress together!
