What's this?
It lies forgotten, underground,
Cannot be seen, and makes no sound.
What's intended to wound an enemy's infantry,
But kills innocents just as mercilessly?
What blights communities far and wide?
There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.
This thing can lie dormant for many years,
But Bang!- there goes a human being-and some of his peers.
What can never be seen, and never be heard,
Until its too late, causing casualties absurd.
What can brutally rip apart families?
What could cause such shocking fatalities?
A Cluster Bomb
Nathan Gore, Aged 13
This is a twist on a ‘What Am I? /what is it?' riddle, but put into the context of a rhyme for effect. The twist is that the item in question is a cluster bomb, and the main part of the poem is emphasizing the terrible destructive results of Cluster Bombs that have been left buried long after wars have finished.
